Marry Your Baby Daddy Day

So I'm watching NY1 just now and Kristin Shaunnacy (sp) starts the lead in to the next story which is about you guessed it, Marry Your Baby Daddy Day. She throws it over to Roger Clark who is their oafish man on the street guy for their human interest stories and he's in my old hood Fort Greene talking bout the fact that 10 chicks are going to marry their baby daddies today.

According to Clark, In light of the fact that 68.4% of single-headed female households (tm Maryann Reid) are headed by Black Women this chick Maryann Reid came up with this brilliant way to get these chicks married and promote her book called Marry Your Baby Daddy.

My mouth dropped open. The blatant self promotion and in my opinion, exploitation of the people involved put an immediate bad taste in my mouth. Questions popped into my head immediately like:

1. What sort of counseling if any was given to these folks before this promotion (because that's what it is)
2. If they didn't marry these cats from the jump off there had to be a good reason (not really a question but still)
3. How is getting these folks married going to address the underlying issues that I'm sure are there?
4. What the fuck?!

So Clark is questioning her about the event and the book and as soon as she said the book was fiction I knew what was up. The book is about 3 broads who have to marry their baby daddies in order to inherit 3 million bucks. She said she came up with the idea for the event in hopes to start a dialog on the issues of the Black family and well, get them hoes married (and promote her book of course!).

Sounds like a bunch of Republican put a band aid on a gunshot wound shit to me. I don't know if I'm pissed at the clear self aggrandizement that Reid is doing or If I'm mad that I had to greet the day with some of warped looking media spin on how Black folks aren't responsible them and theirs. Reid tried to clean it up by saying it's not just us but to me the damage was done.

I don't know, maybe I'm just being extra but I don't think so. Thoughts?
